Top 10 Reasons To River Cruise

For those that have experienced river cruising it is easy to understand why it has become so popular. But those of you that have never been on a River Cruise may be wondering what all the hype is about, and trust me there is a real hype - and it's not about to end any time soon! River Cruising is forecast to continue as one of the hottest holiday trends; operators such as Scenic Tours, AmaWaterways and Avalon Waterways are continuously increasing their selection of itineraries and new ships to reach the demand of consumers!!

We have brought together the very reasons that you should make a River Cruise your next holiday to remember!

1. Hassle-free Experience

First and foremost - A river cruise truly is one of the best ways to visit and explore the world’s most beautiful and fascinating towns and cities hassle-free. You board a luxurious ship, unpack once and relax in true comfort while you sail from one destination to the next. Plus with plenty of time at each port of call there is no pressure to rush here and there, nor are you pressured into joining one of the cruise line’s tours (although they are more often than not included in the price of your cruise). Unlike most Ocean Cruises, River Cruises are far more casual and relaxed. You can leave your dinner suit & cocktail dress at home!

2. A Better Way To Explore

Unlike Ocean Ships, the smaller size of a River Ship enables them to dock right in the heart of cities and towns (and many of the world’s greatest cities are made accessible by river) -  you can literally walk straight off the ship and into the town. Travelling can be hard work - packing a bag, and unpacking many of times, moving from one hotel to another, making your way from one destination to the next, but with river cruising your 'hotel' moves with you! Often referred to as boutique hotels on water, river cruise ships provide all the amenities of a luxury hotel, AND they move – from one destination to the next. On board facilities include restaurants, bars, a fitness centre, spa and pool. Plus with many rivers to explore & various itineraries available worldwide there is something for everybody!

3.Truly Intimate

Because of the nature of the ships, sailing through tight locks and under low bridges, their size is ofcourse restricted. Most river ships accommodate between 150-300 guests, some even fewer. This brings fellow passengers together, making it easier to get to know each other and make friends (many make true friends for life). Many guests choose to dine with their fellow passengers or even arrange to meet for a drink. Plus fewer passengers means a greater access to staff! And believe me, the staff are excellent!

4. Luxurious Accommodation

To many peoples' disbelief, the staterooms onboard are spacious and contemporary; often compared to that of a modern hotel room. Within each stateroom, there are luxury amenities such as a flat-screen TV, internet access (often complimentary), a refrigerator, bathrobes, slippers and other ‘hotel style’ amenities. Most of the ships have a choice of inside or outside cabin, with the majority of outside cabins featuring a step-out balcony.

5. Ever-changing Scenery

With a new port of call every day comes more breath-taking scenery; whether you’re in the pool, on your private balcony or even in the restaurant, you are guaranteed to see the beautiful scenes that pass you by as you sail smoothly along the river. From hillside vineyards to medieval castles, you really can expect fairy-tale scenery! So don't forget your camera!

6. Submerged In Culture

A river cruise provides a real insight into the local cultures; from tours ashore and lectures onboard, to onboard activities and entertainment. The tours and excursions provided are excellent, led by experts who take you to the heart of the culture and history behind each destination! Most of the cruise lines also provide onboard lectures and talks to learn about the history and culture of the destinations. You will also experience a taste of local cuisine on board, as some of the river cruise lines adapt their menus according to the destination (Expect high standards - the food onboard is honestly delicious). Plus activities and entertainment on board often reflect the itinerary and location of the cruise (many of the cruise lines invite local folk groups on board to provide entertainment).

7. Forget About Motion Sickness

You won't be sailing out into the open ocean, there are no waves to worry about! Plus the flat-bottomed ships provide a smooth and pleasant journey, so leave the motion sickness tablets at home!

8. First Class Service

From the moment you have booked your cruise to the moment you disembark your river cruise and board your flight home, you are truly looked after! The staff literally can not do enough for you; the attention to detail you receive from the highly trained staff is outstanding!

9. Shore Excursions Included

River Cruise itineraries feature an awesome variety of complimentary, immersive tours; giving you the opportunity to visit famous landmarks and learn of the local history! Most operators will also provide a couple of options for each port of call - some will be by coach others will involve more walking but you will be given this information onboard. All of the tour guides speak very good English and have extensive knowledge plus you will be provided with an audio headset which allows you to listen to the tour guide very easily.

10. Value For Money

Last but most certainly not least, you’ll be amazed at what’s included! In fact, most river cruises are now all-inclusive, everything from your transfers to the airport, return flights to the UK wine and beer with dinner (many include complimentary drinks throughout your time onboard!
