How to Plan a Budget-Friendly Trip in Cancun

If your dream destination consists of white-sand beaches, stunning archaeological sites, lovely coral reefs, and places that scream paradise, Cancun will be perfect for you. It’s a gorgeous paradise located on the northeastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in southeast Mexico and has been a favorite of many tourists from all across the globe. You might think Cancun is too expensive, but if you know what to do, you’ll be able to experience Cancun without spending too much.

Here are some tips on how to enjoy the beauty of this beautiful paradise without breaking the bank:

Use a daily deal site

Many people have learned to take advantage of the offers on local deal sites in the comfort of their own homes, but they often forget to do this while on vacation. Some sites include awesome deals for local tourist attractions that you will surely want to visit. However, you might have to use Google Translate since these sites are usually in Spanish.

Brush up on Spanish

Even if your Spanish is a bit rusty, don’t hesitate to use it. You’ll look more like a local and get a better deal when negotiating prices. You’ll also be able to find restaurants that have a separate menu in Spanish, and you’ll see that the prices are lower.

Consider taking the bus

If you rent a car or get familiar with local colectivos or public buses, you can cut down on transportation costs. Cancun’s local bus line boasts of air-conditioned buses that will take you almost everywhere, including Tulum, Playa del Carmen, and Akumal. They’re very affordable at around a dollar, and it can already get you from your hotel to downtown.

Shop and Eat like a local

Like in other tourist destinations, the closer you are to tourist spots, the higher the prices will be. If you’re willing to make your way outside the hotel area, you’ll pay less for food and souvenirs. You’ll also get to enjoy an authentic Mexican experience, which includes Mexican food and souvenir shops. Aside from this, you’ll have the chance to make friends with locals who will surely help you discover more about the place.

Skip the snacks at your hotel

You’ll pay a hefty price for the convenience of having drinks and snacks available whenever you want it at your hotel. The best way to avoid paying too much is to stock up while you’re exploring the area. You’ll find lots of gas stations, supermarkets, and convenience stores around you, so buy what you think you’ll need before coming back to your hotel.

Turn off your mobile phone

Your hotel will most likely have free Wi-fi for its guests, so take advantage of it while you can. You can also contact your service provider to arrange a roaming plan before you leave for Cancun. If you want to make local calls, you’ll save money by buying a pay-as-you-go plan and a local SIM, as long as your phone is unlocked.

Bring your own toiletries

Imported toiletries like sunscreen and cosmetics and even batteries cost a premium in this tourist destination. If you really need to pick up something, your best bet will be a supermarket, since they usually offer lower prices.

Think carefully when booking a hotel

Accommodation can be expensive, especially if you’re traveling with your family. If you’re not sure where to stay in Cancun, you might want to look for other options outside the hotel zone. The main point of your trip is to enjoy all that the place has to offer, even if it means staying at a less flashy resort.

Haggle when possible

The locals won’t get mad if you haggle. After all, bartering has always been a tradition in Mexican culture. You’re even expected to respectfully haggle as you shop. You don’t have to settle on the first price you get. You can always check out the prices in nearby shops to see where you can get value for your money.

Pay in pesos

To avoid high exchange rates in shops and restaurants, you should pay in Mexican pesos. There are bank machines scattered around the city that will let you withdraw money in dollars or pesos. Using the local currency will even get you better prices, so you might want to have your money exchanged as soon as possible.

You don’t have to spend too much if you want to enjoy the numerous features of the paradise that is Cancun. Bear these tips in mind as you travel, so you can get the most out of your money while basking in Cancun’s beauty.
